I wanted to encourage the Strider owners that hair popping razor sharp edge is very easy to get out of a Strider SNG or SMF. Dont let those thin blade Sebenza boys tell you different.:D Now I am using the super thick .187 blade on my SMF CC compared to the SNG's slightly thinner .165. If I can do it on my SMF, it should be a touch easier with the SNG.
The secret of a razor sharp Strider is putting a more common 20 degree edge per side. Striders come from the factory with a 22.5 degree edge and its a bit on the thick side. The angle is too obtuse for such a thick blade to be a razor slicer. I feel the 20 degree edge is still tough enough for grunt work but more balanced for EDC cutting. A polished edge also lessens the friction and resistance for scary sharp results.
I used a simple Lansky Diamond Pro kit. This is a very affordable and effective knife sharpening system. You dont need to spend a lot of money on a more expensive system to get a professional result.
It will reprofile your knife quickly with pro results.
I stayed away from the coarse stones and started with a medium stone. Your not taking off much metal so the medium stone is good enough. All you are doing is backing that blade angle back a bit for a less drastic V angle. Tip: always push the stone into the blade, never pull the stone over the blade. Think of your knife shaving the stone. Always work from the base to the tip of the blade. Keep a constant light pressure and keep the stone moving as you push off of the tip of the knife. This will keep the tip of your knife very pointy Work your way up to the fine stone. This is your main sharpening stone for putting on a razor edge. Once you are happy that your edge is slicing paper and shaving hairs efficiently, move to the ultra fine stone. This is the stone that will give you the supper polished edge and turn your sharp knife into scary sharp.
Here is the Mystro's tip for making the Strider sharper than any knife in your collection: Work the ultra fine stone at the 20 degree angle. You will be starting at the base of the blade making about 6-8 upward strokes moving toward the point of the blade. Always work from the base to the tip of the blade. Once you start to see that mirror edge appear and you cant believe your edge is so smooth and reflective. Mystro's 2nd tip:Use the ultra fine stone and change to the 25 degree angle . Use a light tough and work the ultra fine stone 6-8 times each side like you did with the fine stone. Remember you are working from the base of the blade moving towards the tip. Keep a constant light pressure as you push off of the tip of the knife. This will put a slight micro edge on you Strider and you wont believe how wicked sharp your Strider can get. I hope this helped some of you Strider owners out and dont listen to anyone that tells you a Strider is not a effective slicer.
For touch-ups I just strop the blade on a piece of leather or use the ulra fine stone and work the 20 degree angle to repolish the edge out and touch the micro edge using the 25 degree angel. Thats it.
Oh yea..This will work with non Strider knives as well...
